What exactly is walk & talk therapy?

Walk & talk therapy is an evidence-based form of counseling that takes place outdoors while walking side by side, rather than sitting inside an office. This therapeutic approach blends the mental health benefits of traditional talk therapy with the physical and emotional benefits of gentle movement, time in nature, and fresh air. Sessions typically follow a slow, comfortable pace and are tailored to each client’s needs. We may weave elements of eco-therapy into sessions which focuses more specifically on examining our relationship to nature as a means of healing.

Why choose walk & talk therapy?

Have you ever had a really meaningful conversation with someone while driving in the car? Sometimes conversations feel easier and more natural when you’re not sitting face-to-face making direct eye contact. For many people, especially when sharing vulnerable or tender experiences, that kind of setup can feel less intimidating.

Some clients find that walking side by side creates a similar sense of ease and freedom, which can help them open up more. Even though we aren’t sitting across from each other, my role as a therapist remains the same—I stay closely attuned to what you are sharing and how you are experiencing the conversation. The work we do together is the same; the setting just looks a little different while we walk.

Below are some of the ways walk-and-talk therapy can support the areas I specialize in:

For Anxiety

  • Calms the nervous system: Fresh air and time outdoors can lower stress hormones, which are often elevated in anxiety.

  • Feels less intimidating: Side-by-side walking can reduce social pressure and self-consciousness, making it easier to open up.

  • Interrupts rumination: Being in motion and in nature encourages presence, helping to break cycles of overthinking or worry.

  • Relieves physical tension: Gentle movement can reduce muscle tightness that often accompanies anxiety.

For Burnout

  • Integrates self-care naturally: Walking combines therapy with movement and time outdoors, making self-care feel accessible rather than another item on the to-do list.

  • Boosts clarity and flexibility: Research shows walking improves cognitive flexibility and problem-solving, supporting decision-making when feeling overwhelmed.

  • Encourages slow, intentional rest: At Amble, I emphasize the healing power of slowing down. Even one session a week can create a pocket of permission to pause, reset, and reclaim balance.

  • Stimulates creativity: Walking while reflecting has been linked to increased creativity and idea generation, helping people struggling with burnout find new ways to navigate life’s demands.

For Trauma

  • Promotes calm and safety: Walking naturally activates the parasympathetic nervous system, countering the fight, flight, freeze or fawn response.

  • Supports emotional processing: Walking is a gentle form of bilateral stimulation, activating both hemispheres of the brain. This can reduce emotional intensity, access “stuck” memories, and help integrate new insights.

  • Balances the therapeutic dynamic: Trauma can impact trust in ourselves and others. Walking side by side helps create a collaborative space where your agency is honored, and I am here to support, not lead.

  • Enhances grounding: Outdoor sensory experiences—the sound of leaves, feeling the ground beneath your feet, noticing the sky—help you stay present and communicate safety to the nervous system, reminding it of the difference between past experiences and the present moment
